To me, where people who are making this music come from makes a difference. Southern music also needs to be based upon a foundation of what we might loosely call "roots" music. The roots have to be there, in evidence, musically and the performers need to be from the South. I love the music of old timey revival bands (NLCR) but they will never be southern in the way that Charlie Poole or Uncle Dave were. Likewise, as good a musician and as steeped in the traditions as John Hammond is, he will never be a real southern bluesman. Richard Straw Radford University Radford, Va.
